Balham And The Ballrooms - a Memory of Balham.

I lived in Balham from 1947 to 1967, and recall two ballrooms. The first being directly opposite Balham underground station, above the ABC café on the corner of Chestnut Grove. It was owned by a guy called Sydney Francis and titled as such. The other dance hall was located along Balham high road, (opposite Du Cane Court and Balham park road) called the "Arranmore" Frequented by the local Irish community. I hope this helps! I lived in Balham at that time and I knew the Arronmore Ballroom. It was the first London Gig for The Moody Blues. I was there! Coming home from work one night as I came out of Balham Tube Stn there were some pretty girls (but I forgot all Girls are Pretty, and I mean it) rubber stamping the hands of those they felt might like to see the Moodies, and that rubber stamp got you foc into the Arronmore on that Monday eve. They were there for a few weeks until "Go Now" was released in late Nov 64 and the next week they never turned up. No surprise.
Interested to hear from anyone who has memories of Balham between 1962-1969.

I lived in Balham from 48-70. I lived above Daniels Drapers store on high street and in pickets street. Went to st Mary's school & marianne Thornton. My sister and I went to Sidney Francis school of dancing & I went to the Arranmore Ballroom owned by Mr Anderson, I remember seeing the Moody Blues and you had to have your hand stamped on entry. Had great times there when we were younger no worries always out either at Clapham, Tooting or Wandsworth Common. Lots of good memories there. I was then Linda Thompson and my sister was Ann.

Yes I was there too and remember it well, particularly Go Now.
My sister and I frequently went to Sydney Francis during the mid 60's and it's strange to think how we were going out at 15 to gigs and dance venues when these days it seems so young. My granddaughter is 14 and couldn't imagine her going out at night wearing makeup and travelling home late, but we all did it in the 60's
