Me Too (Worked In Sainsburys

A Memory of Barking.

The year was about 1950/51 I also worked in Sainsburys I had been working in Upton Park in Ray's bridal shop and had to go to Sainsburys for my mum ,one of my school friendsShirley Barbara Smith was working there and said why don't I go and work there. So I did. What I mainly liked about it was that you could take turns on all the counters starting of groceries weighing sugar out selling tea etc. Not forgetting it was rationing at that time then on to the butter counter 2ozs per person per week. Cooked meats apricot tarts and mince(meat )pies 1 per person a week if we had them only got about 1 metal container with about 30 pies in them for the whole day. 1 sausage per person a week and you had to be a registered customer of Sainsburys to qualify and then on to the bacon counter where I was taught to bone a side of bacon that has been an asset during my life. Obviously there were some other products I've not mentioned. Like the cheese counter we only sold cheddar or what thy called cream / processed cheese again very small amount per person. I was lucky enough to be there when they started selling Gouda Edam and Gorgonzola so we would some times have a sneaky taster. It's amazing just how many memories come flooding back when you start to remember these events.

My name Maureen Saunders that is one of my memories above and I would dearly love to hear if anyone was there around about that time. I have many other memories and I love hearing the memories from people about the same time. By the time I worked in Sainsburys I had moved from kings road of the north st end to Woodbridge rd. up by the faircross I.I haven't read anything yet about people who enjoyed going to the Princes Hall near the Westbury on a Saturday night. Only being able to buy orange or lemon juice in the interval.
Hi Maureen,
Just seen your post and it brought back many happy memories of Barking. I was born in 1946, and can certainly remember rationing, and was puzzled when my mum would use the little squares from her coupon book! As well as Sainsburys, I remember The Home and Colonial store too. Timothy Whites was a large shop on the corner of East Street and Ripple Road (Blake's Corner) and I seem to remember a Boots shop further along. I believe Boots took over all the Timothy Whites stores in 1968.
Happy days.
Regards,
Barbara Lawrence
