More about this scene
Cliff lifts became a popular solution to the problems of beach access in the later years of the Victorian period, and were used at a number of seaside resorts. The West Cliff Lift may not have had to cope with the long gradient of some others, but was a masterpiece of mechanical design nevertheless.
