Carnforth's industries of sand and gravel extraction and iron smelting depended upon the Lancaster Canal and later the railway, when an important junction between the north-south and east-west lines was created here. The station, which lies a short distance to the left along Market Street, was used as a set during the filming of 'Brief Encounter'.

As a child in the 1960’s and 70’s I went several times with my family to visit Mrs Esther Pomfret (Auntie Ettie to us; she was a relation of my father's) at Carnforth Lodge, Lancaster Road.  I don't think this is shown in the photo.
