More about this scene
Beyond the gates, the Ewell Road extends onwards to the centre of Cheam village. This eastern entrance eventually came to be known as Bellgate, since the Bell public house stands further up the hill to the right. The Bellgate Lodge with its leaded windows, battlements and ornamented chimney was demolished in 1938, around the time of the opening of the Nonsuch County School, when this gateway became the rear entrance to the school grounds.
