More about this scene
'Chipping' means 'market' in Old English, and it was as a market centre for the woollen industry that Chipping Campden rose to affluence. The town boasts many fine stone buildings, including the early 17th-century almshouses we see in the foreground here and St James' Church - one of the most magnificent in the Cotswolds - beyond.
