Caption for Corbridge, Main Street C1955: The building facing our cameraman is Monksholme, built in the early 17th century as an inn; it has genuine attic dormers, and was restored in 1891. Across the road to the left stands Low Hall. This building is thought to be a late 13th- to early 14th-century hall that was raised to a pele-tower during the 15th century. A major extension was added to the rear of the building during the 19th century.

Memories of Corbridge


As I was approaching my 7th birthday at the end of November 1943, my mother (Nan Mackie) was taken from our row house home at 34, Briar Edge, Forest Hall, nr Newcastle-on-Tyne to Dilston Hall, Corbridge, where she gave birth to my sister Dorothy, November 1st. I was born in Dilston Nursing Home in May 1942. My uncle lived at Dilston House which is now luxury self-catering accommodation. We returned many times during the 1940s and 1950s and I remember wading at the edge of the Devils Water.

We moved to Prudhoe in 1947, I was 12 years old. My dad, Bill Turner RSM, took over the Drill Hall in Swallow Close. I thought it was wonderful as we had relatives in Prudhoe, plus a grandma, Mary Ann Turner.
