More about this scene
Cowan Bridge lies two miles from Kirkby Lonsdale. Charlotte Bronte and her sisters spent such a spartan childhood at the school for clergymen's daughters here that she immortalised it in her famous novel 'Jane Eyre': 'We set out cold, arrived at church colder and during service became almost paralysed'. The Rev Carus Wilson, vicar of Tunstall, established the school in 1823. A commemorative tablet is on the wall of Bronte Cottage, the first house on the right next to the old road bridge.
