Daventry, From Newnham Hill c.1960

More about this scene
We are looking down on Daventry from Newnham Hill, a view that has been changed by a pink rash of housing estates as the town rapidly expanded from its comfortable 5000 in 1955 to around 25,000 in 2005. The projected maximum is 40,000! One 'building' that has disappeared is the gasometer, just visible on the left of the picture. With the advent of the natural gas supply grid, gasometers have become a rare feature in our townscapes.
