Nostalgic memories of Denham's local history

Share your own memories of Denham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

The picture titled Denham, Widewater Lock c.1965 is in fact Herefield Lock with the Moorhall Road bridge in the background, there is also another picture titled Denham Lock that also shows Herefield Lock and not Denham Deep Lock. Thank you for letting us know - we will alter our archive accordingly - Editor
Does anyone remember the pageant to commemorate the Coronation held in the village? I was very cross because I had to go as a chimney sweep but I remember one of the girls was dressed as Queen Elizabeth 1 and was riding a white horse I was so envious of her. We were all given mugs. don't know what became of mine. I lived at The Lea and I remember they must have rented or borrowed a TV because we watched the ...see more
Does anyone remember the cottages on the Green? My husband's family lived there but he was to young to remember much before they moved to Gerrards Cross. I came from Chalfont St Peter so don't know much about Denham. Hope someone out there has a good memory.
Does anyone remember the cottages on the Green in Denham 1940-1950's? My husband's family used to live there and I would love to know more.
My name is Mel Edwards and I was at Denham Court for a few years. Mr & Mrs Hill were in charge, then they had a son called Steven and a daughter who I think was called Susan. I can remember there were 9 dormitories, a snooker room, library, table-tennis tables and a room where Mr Hill had a quite extensive train set; his office was next to the dining room. Outside in the courtyard you could play ...see more
I too, remember this bridge well and with affection from my early childhood. We lived in Brokengate Lane up near Tatling End, but cousins lived actually in the village. During the war, my mother and I used to walk down to here carrying a battery/accumulator for our radio - we used to have to have it charged up, and this was done at a little car work-shop situated just this side of the photo on the left. ...see more
My mother died when I was a baby, my father died when I was about 12/13. My name was Theresa Byrne, my family, brothers sisters etc were separated and I was sent to the Lea in Denham where I was raised by a couple named Mr and Mrs Leslie Sharp who at that time were in charge of the childrens home. If anyone reading this was also raised at the Lea, please let me know. I am married and I now live in the USA. Thank you, Theresa.
Can anyone share any memories of this era and beyond? At my time there I went to Greenaway School, Uxbridge and I also sang in the choir at Ealing Church. I remember Mr Hill very well, especially his old Ford Popular which we used to stand on the running board as he brought us along the long drive if he was passing. I also remember Sambo Williams. I remember we all wanted to run away but we did not get far, Mr ...see more

I lived at Denham Court from 1958-62. Although we were not supposed to go via the village, I used to go this way and look at the trout in the stream by the bridge. It brings wonderful memories back!
