Doune, Castle, Retainers' Hall 1899

More about this scene
Situated to the right of the keep-gatehouse is the retainers' hall, a long building with a solid semi-circular bastion halfway along its length. The bastion serves several purposes. Its turreted top offered an additional defensive position from which flanking fire could be delivered along the wall to either side. Its solid bulk provided additional support for the roof.
