More about this scene
Up to 1974, Eccles was a town in its own right. It received its Charter of Incorporation in 1891, and then, of course, needed its own Town Hall. Here we see Eccles Town Hall in Church Street; at this time it was still its own master, but threatened with take-over even then by big brother Salford. The Town Hall was built in 1881 to a design by John Lowe with a pavilion roof and tall chimney pots. Just as striking is the Town Hall Tavern, black and white, next to it on the left.
