I have two memories, one of my grandfather, his name was Parr.He lived a bit down from the crossroads,he used to keep pigs and he used to work in the forest.I can always remember hams hanging from beams in the living room with a big fire.this must have been in 1950. My wife, Brenda, and I have fond memories of the Major Oak. On 7th November 1959 I drove in thick fog to Sherwood Forest and found that the sun was shining there. I led Brenda into the hollow trunk of the tree (access was unrestricted at that time) and proposed to her... she accepted. There cannot be many girls who have been proposed to inside a tree!
My family all come from around Newark but my grandma on my mother's side lived in Edwinstowe and worked on her husband's farm. I recall visiting the farm on warm Sunday afternoons in my dad's car. I would go off exploring the farm on my own and watching the lad, of a similar age, milking the cows. I would be around 7/8 years old. Afterwards we would all go to the forest and play cricket for hours. Happy days.
Unfortunately I don't have any memories of Rexco but wonder if anyone does; in particular the turbine exploding or something similar. Thanks to all who reply.

My new friend was Jean Matkin whose father also worked at the school, we had many happy hours playing and village life was good, the miners so friendly and helpfull with the odd help with coal, and in winter time my dad made a sledge so that we could get milk etc from the ...see more
My first memories were living at 56, 4th Avenue aged approx six years. We were very poor and my mother had many days when she fed us but didn't eat herself, even though my father worked seven days a week at Thoresby Pit. I remember our next-door neighbors were called Marsden and the teenage daugher used to stain her legs and paint a line up the back so that they looked like nylons with seams, a fascinating ...see more
My ancestors were farming in Edwinstowe in 1662. I am trying to find out where they were living at the time. They were William and Anne Snowden and are listed in parish records at the time. Wouldn't it be fun to see where they lived? If anyone knows how I can find out, I would appreciate the help. Their son, John Snowden (born in Edwinstowe) was the first to emigrate to the US. He landed in Philadelphia before William ...see more
