More about this scene
Completed in 1794, the Basingstoke Canal is 37 miles long; it was originally planned as a major commercial route to link London and Guildford with Southampton via Andover or Winchester. However, the canal's fortunes were never particularly good, and eventually the western end was filled in. Restoration work began in 1973, and the canal reopened in 1991. The area was an Army training ground. Boating cost one shilling (5 pence) per hour.
