More about this scene
Sited on the Haywards Road junction, the white building on the extreme right is Lloyds Bank; this building was later demolished, but Lloyds are still on the same site. The shop with the flagpole (on the left-hand side of the road, just beyond the taller parade of shops) is George Hilton & Son, a furniture and furnishing store. George Hilton arrived in Haywards Heath from Hastings in 1882, and started a cabinet making business. By 1887, he was trading from this spot, though the building was not the same one we see here. He died in 1938. The site was re-developed, and the Orchards shopping centre was opened there in 1982.
