Nostalgic memories of Horley's local history

Share your own memories of Horley and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I attended the junior part of the school (Form 1) 1963-64 at the age of 5. My name was Felicity Hayton. My teacher was Miss Coulter who I think was Australian. My mother taught Biology In the senior school for that year, and my younger sister Jackie attended Kindergarten. Her teacher was Miss Smith; and Miss Smalley played the piano for our assembly, and “music and movement” classes. I feel I had a good education ...see more
I went to Kingsley between 1956 and 1966 teachers I remember were ,Miss Edwards ,Miss Fowler , Miss Sparks , Miss Davies ,Miss Knight, MissStradling, Mrs Hayle, Miss Willett ,Miss Wise. Mrs Nicholson. I remember the house gardens (down the left hand side of the “ playground” where the climbing bars were)we all had to help in , that may have been a punishment for losing house points. I was in McKenzie I remember the house ...see more
My parents returned to UK to put my brother and I into separate boarding schools. I went to Kingsley, Horley from 1960-63. My name was then Alison Kirby. I remember Miss Willetts as my form mistress and she taught Nature Study. I was in Mackenzie House (green shield). The dormitories were named after famous poets I think (can anyone correct me if I'm wrong please?) I do recall the fire escape hatches - not ...see more
I went to Kingsley as a day schola in 1961. I enjoyed many happy years there. My head teacher was Miss Edwards and Miss Fowler was the debuty. Miss Davies was my year one teacher and miss willet was head of primary years. I had so many happy years there and I was so sad to leave. It would be nice to hear from anyone who also enjoyed Kingsley the way that I did. Julia Henderson
The tythe barn was where we had gym lessons. I clearly remember climbing the rope ladder then hanging from one rung by my knees. I then grabbed the rung to swing down. Unfortunately Imy hand trapped several strands of my long hair. Thus, when i did swing down...that hair was roughly pulled out! I felt like i was being scaled! Oh, the pain! The old oak tree in the fields...it was a dare for "new bugs" ...see more
Another time we had a 'new bug' . Her initiation dare was to go down the front stairwell. This was something pupils were NEVER allowed to do. We had to use the tiny, narrow, middle staircase. Anyway, the girls in my dorm dared her to go down and into the 6th form common room...well after lights-out. She was too frightened to go alone so, in a pathetic effort to be acknowledged and approved of, I offered to ...see more
Yes, I DID run away from school. I boarded, I hated it, I was unhappy, I wet the bed so was bullied and punished instead of being helped. It was a showery April morning. I donned my own clothes with my school summer coat and hat and just walked! I walked and I walked, hiding in bus shelters when it rained then setting off again as the sun came out. I was making my way to my aunt who lived in Leatherhead. I was only 10 ...see more

We moved to Horley in 1952, when I was 10. (Dad worked for Mr Coutts repairing radio's & TV's.) Mum, Dad, & 2 brothers, Robin & Colin. A third brother Crispin Allan (after pub owner) was born there in 1953, after we found him in the long grass whilst searching for our football??? I have the movie to prove it!!! We lived in an 18' caravan in a field behind the Inn. The owner Mr Allan gave us permission, after ...see more
I was a boarder at Kingsley School. I clearly recall our "crocodile" to church every Sunday, the Sunday story time whilst we continued our "hobby" ( I really do not know how they would have coped with a singing hobby!). We were all encouraged to be ladylike and NOT wear patent shoes as our thick blue knickers would be seen as a reflection! There was a huge shrubbery in the front semi-circular lawn that ...see more
