More about this scene

Kilby is a Scandinavian form of the Old English 'cilda-tun'; the first part means 'child', or more probably 'young nobleman'. This small village is set in an enclosure landscape of straight hawthorn hedges, between Fleckney and Countesthorpe, to the south of the city. The unprepossessing church of St Mary Magdalen by Henry Goddard (1813-99 - see St Andrew's, Countesthorpe) sits on the south side of the main street. This view looks at what amounts to 19th-century small-scale development along the Fleckney Road; the whole adds up to a very cordial rural scene, common over southern Leicestershire.

Kilby 1960s
I lived at 9 Main Street, Kilby from about the age of 2 (1964) until 1968-9, when it was converted from 2 small houses to our 4 bed house, and have fond memory's of ... The school across the road, attending for the first time, my sister being may queen attendant to Ruth (?) the may queen. Flooding and with from the bottom of the road and the water reaching our house, coming in through the front door. The farmer ...see more

Summer Holidays
I was born in 1948 and my Grandma lived at Brook Bridge House in Kilby. I can remember hating living in Industrial Huddersfield but only because I could not wait to get to Kilby for my weeks holiday in the summer. There was a farm in the village, a guy called Neil lived there who was my age, very young! I used to go up there as much as possible and play with the animals, it was just heaven, I remember Mrs Moynihan ...see more

My Birthplace
I was born at 7 Fleckney Rd in 1951. My dad lived there with his parents and when he married my mum they lived there until they died; they were Harry and Doris Goddard. I was one of four children and we had a great childhood, my parents were well loved and respected by everyone in the village.

Kilby
I was born in Kilby in 1943 in the house across from the Dog and Gun (I think it was called the Swan or maybe Black Swan?). When I was about a year or so old my parents moved to Foston (Great Peatling Lodge) and that is where I grew up and went to school in Countesthorpe and then on to Guthlaxton. Now living in the States and get homesick for Leicestershire.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
