More about this scene
There had been a Monday market here since 1154, but it ceased in the Victorian period. The Manor House (centre left) with its 19th-century brick façade is central to the market place. The houses to the left have been replaced, and those beyond restored. The church lost the top of its tower in 1829, and it was not repaired until the 1960s. The area is never as car-free today.
