Nostalgic memories of Redditch's local history

Share your own memories of Redditch and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I remember as a child walking past this pub with its revolving doors and when someone came out there was a strong smell of beer wafting out.
If my memory serves me correctly, this junction had the only set of traffic lights in Redditch at one time.
I worked at Rainscourts at the rear on Fridays after school and Saturday mornings, preparing food for the shop.Tthe manager was Mr Whitehouse, a good boss and alround nice chap.. happy days. The shop was to the right of picture.
I remember Regent Motorways coach garage just up on the left of photo and going on day trips and holidays to Weston from here... good memories.
I remember Bob's cafe (and I remember it was Pauline's Pantry before that). I was born at my grandparents home, back of 48 Alcester St (which was at the back of the chemist). My friends and I spent many happy hours in Bob's Cafe...of course we never had any money, except for the dances on Saturday night - they were a must to attend. Lot's of memories!
I loved working at Woolies, I was on the sweet counter. Sometimes we would swap some choc for a few biscuits..naughty but nice. Mr Lee was the manager, bit of a tarter at times, but I liked him. I remember stock-taking as I almost missed my bus home to Studley a few times. We used to take these baskets on wheels up in the lift to get stock. Good job no health and safety then as we used to climb up the metal shelving to get ...see more
I was working in the Needle Factory before Woolies and met my first love. He lived on Willow Way, had a sister, and a little dog; his name was Francis Danks (Dinky). Anyone know what happened to him? Hope he had a good life. He was in the Navy. But life has allsorts of plans for us ,and off we go in the big wide world...
Biscuits, as such, was one of my departments. Biscuits, hardware and haberdashery, (what the hell is haberdashery), I can't even remember now, sewing and such like I think. I remember the broken biscuits, I used to take home bags of Wagon Wheels. I have not been back to Redditch since 1960 and have this terrible yearning to do so, but people who are familiar with the current Redditch have warned me against it, saying I ...see more
Does anyone remember Bob`s Cafe ? This was a place just behind the old fire station, in the same street as the Youth Club. I used to come home on leave from the Navy and head straight for Bob`s Cafe. All the teenagers used to go there on a Saturday morning and arrange what they would do on the Saturday night. Because most did not have a car, we would all end up at the Palace dance. After the dance finished some would go ...see more
This lovely fountain has been around for years, but some things have disappeared. Does anyone know what happened to the lovely black clock that was in Royal Square?
