The Ensor, Arrow and Crest cotton mills were built next to the canal around 1907.
(Matthew Constantine) Shaddon Mill was reputed to be the largest cotton mill in Europe when built.
There was even a cotton mill in the middle of the town in the late 18th century, owned by the Bowen family.
In 1871 William Haworth had joined his father Thomas in the family cotton business; Thomas was a major employer and owned several mills.
