Where the brook runs through the village, each cottage had a stone slab to cross. Sir Ralph Assheton purchased a fine example of a 'Downham diamond' for only five shillings in the 17th century.
Willows growing by Bashall Brook were used for basket making. The small farmstead (left) could have been an alehouse, like the one at Mason Green.
Opposite the Bushel & Strike, the gap in the wall originally opened onto a set of steps leading down to the landing stage on the Hen Brook.
One of Whalley's famous sons was Samuel Brooks, who moved to Manchester to make his fortune - he named an area that he purchased there Whalley Range.
The west and south sides of the town are bounded by the River Ouse and the Hen Brook. The course of the High Street and the Market Square are clearly visible.
Before this it was the premises for Brooke, a baker in the mid 19th century, and then a smaller Malmesbury bank which was taken over by North Wiltshire Banking Co.
Their path lay across the meadow which is now crossed by Tor Way, then alongside the Tilmore Brook, turning sharp right where there is still a footbridge, and finally down Folly Lane to the High
Today there are 34 listed buildings in the Basildon area, including the raised pool with Mother and Child Statue and Brooke House in the Town Square; both of these are listed Grade II.
There is the modern settlement by the Ilford Works, two communities either side of the Mobberley Brook, and a cluster of houses by the Bird in Hand.
