On The Way To School

This is the junction of Woburn Lane (straight on) and Spinney Lane (turn left). The Primary School I attended was along Spinney Lane, which at that time was completely un-metalled and rutted, so getting to school with clean shoes was a challenge in wet weather.

A memory of Ayr in 1947 by Andrew Plain

I Was In The Very First Intake In That School.

It had just been built and I was in the class of 1960. I struggle to recall the teacher's names but I'm pretty sure there was a Miss Lynn and there was definitely a Miss Kill. She was my first love at ...Read more

Harvey's Roof Garden

We moved to live in Hersham, Surrey, in the late 1950's and visited Guildford quite often through the 1960's. A visit to the Rooftop Cafe was always a highlight for me. I remember jumping from stepping stone to stepping stone, ...Read more

Living In Burgh Heath

I remember the doctors and going to see Dr Wade. There was a wooden seat that went round the wall of the waiting room, my legs would just dangle. If memory serves me well, I'm sure there was a farm behind the shops where as kids we earnt money potato picking.

Caption For Bath, The Roman Baths, Sculpture From Temple Of Sul Minerva 1907

This wonderful pediment from the temple of Sul Minerva contains the famous Gorgon's Head. It has Celtic and Roman features, and is part of a sculptured shield.

Caption For Launceston, South Gate And Castle 1893

Race Hill was once the main road into Launceston from the south; it leads down to the South Gate, which is the last remnant of the old town walls.

Caption For Fair Oak, Eastleigh Road C1955

This is the old Eastleigh Road, and we can see the post office and the telephone kiosk on the left. We are looking towards the old oak tree, which is just out of sight at the end of the road.

Caption For Wroxham, The Bridge C1940

A 'temporary' bridge was superimposed on the old stone structure, pending the building of a town bypass, which still has to be constructed.

Caption For Northampton, Market Square 1922

Stand where this picture was taken, and you can see that the fountain in the middle of the square is no longer there.

The old Northamptonshire Union Bank on the right of the picture is now the Nat West, though fortunately the facade remains intact.

This view is in the heart of the village, where Green Street meets the High Street at a small green with a 1920s War Memorial cross.

Caption For Overstone, Swimming Pool C1955

The next two views were taken around the swimming pool north of Overstone Manor. They are typical scenes from the more hardy 1950s, when the country was dotted with open air pools and lidos.

Caption For Grantham, High Street 1904

Sad to say, this is an archive view, for since 1904 all the dignified Georgian and early Victorian buildings on the right have been replaced as far as the middle distance building with a corniced parapet

Caption For Ingoldmells, High Street C1965

This part of the village has not changed: the Ship pub is still there on the right, and the line of little shops still stands on the left, but all with different owners.

Caption For Mablethorpe, The Beach C1950

This photograph was probably taken from the top of the big wheel, something no longer possible. Most of this area had been redeveloped after the 1953 storm, and it has since been redeveloped again.

A family group of children enjoy a boating trip on the River Leven at Newby Bridge, at the southern end of Lake Windermere.

Caption For Aberdour, The Stone Pier 1900

Caption For Nottingham, Long Row East 1902

This bustling scene offers a microcosm of life a century ago. Though it seems we are looking back into an era long past, already the trams are electric-powered.
