The layout of Stamford, climbing gently in terraces up from the Welland, is well shown in this photograph from St Martin's church tower.
The new church, St Peter's, seems to have been deliberately placed in a prominent position close to the market place and the approach to the castle.
Here Symondsbury may be deficient but it can boast the thatched Ilchester Arms Inn (right), which is named for the Strangways family, owning lands from Abbotsbury Swannery to Melbury House
