Just a few yards up the hill from All Saints' Church, Barn Hill is a far cry from the commercial bustle of Red Lion Square.
To its right Barn Hill climbs gently north-west, a street of almost unspoilt Georgian houses.

This splendid barn was built as storage for hay.
A mile to the north of the stadium, Barn Hill takes about itself an air of rural contemplation as the camera looks out to the surrounding hills.
We are looking south- eastwards from West Hill across to the Victorian villas on the sylvan summit of East Hill, glimpsing the tower of the parish church (left).
Situated at the top of a steepish hill on the road from Heswall, the entrance to Beech Farm is on the right in our picture.
This beautiful view, seen from the path up the hill towards Miles Cross, looks north to the Manor House (top left) and its thatched 17th-century barn (right of centre).
The hill on the right has a memorial to Devonport's most famous son, Captain Scott, and on the riverside in the middle distance the large barn-like building is King Billy Yard, the oldest covered shipyard
The stream ran down from Pen Hill through this pond to provide motive power for the corn mill over the road and below the Heifer Inn.
We cannot leave Berkhamsted Place without mentioning the Great Barn at Castle Hill Farm, the home farm of Berkhamsted Place.

At the summit of Lodge Hill to the north of the Upper Winchendon ridge is a French chateau.
In Roman times a fort stood on nearby Brough Hill, and a garrison was maintained here from about AD 80 to around the end of the 4th century.
