More about this scene
Staines may have got its name from the stone- paved remains of a branch of the Roman road of Akeman Street, that once ran to the important Roman station of Ad Pontes nearby, or perhaps from a Roman milestone that once stood here. Some have said that the name comes from the 'London Stone' or 'Staines Stone' which marked the jurisdiction of the city over the Thames at this point. Clarence Street dates probably from the time of the Georgian expansion of the town.
