Although the railway station opened in 1847 some 200 yards south of the Cock Hotel crossroads, development did not really get under way here until the Epsom Downs line opened in 1865, and new station buildings were erected. This terrace of shops with accommodation above dates from about 1870, and is in an austere style with plain parapets above brick cornices. Bowling's the ironmongers moved to Grove Road in the 1920s, and their shop became a branch of the Midland Bank. This has since been converted to a pub called 'The Old Bank'.
