Sutton, The Angel 1896

More about this scene
At the top of Angel Hill is the Angel Inn, an early 19th- century building. It was once a stop where coaches and travellers changed horses before the descent into Sutton. In 1896 it was still used as livery stables. The main changes to the scene made since the picture was taken are the removal of the signboard at the left, and the unfortunate roughcasting and painting of the brickwork. Needless to say no livery facility is necessary in the age of the motorcar.
