Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. More about this scene

The Icknield Way was a pre-Roman, Iron Age trading route running along the northern border of Hertfordshire. At Baldock it formed the length of White Horse Street and Hitchin Street. Inns and beer houses served the needs of travellers and waggon drivers - the Chequers stands on the left and the George and Dragon faces us in the distance. The photographer stood with his back to the site of the White Horse, which burnt down in the 1860s. Fred Butler, who ran the petrol station on the left, started business in the 1890s as a bicycle retailer. Past Butlers on the left is the Rose and Crown, which provided overnight garaging for motorists and was strongly endorsed by both the AA and the RAC. A far cry from the days when the four-legged horse power ruled and Baldock's annual horse fair took place in White Horse Street.

Animal House
From 1947, my family used to drive between Middlesex and West Suffolk via Baldock. My father used to point out a house on the East side of the High Street that had many animal figures on the street-facing wall. Does anyone remember it and perhaps have a photograph?

The Baldock Methodist Church
The towers at the back of this picture are of the Baldock Methodist Church, by the 1960/70's the shop in front was a gentleman's outfitters. I and my sisters, were christened in the Methodist Church here, and my Mum Valerie (nee Juffs) and Dad Frederick Cogar (1925 - 2000) were both church members, as were Mums parents before her (Stuart and Suzette Juffs). Baldock Hostel
I lived in the hostel in the 1960s and liked the area very much. I was a member of the working man's club, the cinema always had up to date films. The town boasted good pubs, there was plenty of work in nearby Letchworth. I had spells in Borg Warner, Emme's Plastic Moulding, Brand's Coatings and more. I heard most of what I mention is now gone.

The Chequers Pub
I remember when my nan had the Chequers. My Dad grew up there. We used to go there every Sunday and Nanna Bet would let us have crisps and a coke, in the old style glass bottles. Phil would give us a load of 10ps to go on the machines in the front bar and I thought it was brilliant. Does anyone remember or did you know my uncle who lived there, Billy Wilson? I also remember a lovely Scottish man called Mac who was always in the pub, he had a huge moustach - happy happy days x

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
