More about this scene
The Barry Dock and Railways Company, which became the largest integrated dock and railway company in Great Britain, was formed in 1884. Colliery owners, dissatisfied with increased costs at Cardiff, decided to open a dock at Barry, and built it between the mainland and Barry Island. It was opened in 1889 and became the greatest coal shipping port in South Wales, handling 11 million tons in 1913.
