The Colour Of Honey

A Memory of Bexleyheath.

It was the late 1950's and everyone in my family were keen gardeners. One hotly anticipated event in the garden calender was always the Summer Horticultural Show in Danson Park. Inside the huge white marquee was a marvel of light, colour and fragrance, a magical space filled with row upon row of home-made and home-grown produce that, as a 10 year-old boy, fair took my breath away. Along with displays of fruit, vegetables and flowers were the food entries including cakes, jams, pickles, chutneys and preserves. But the one catagory that has remained firmly in my memory is the incredible variety of honeys. These varied in colour from almost white, cream, beige, through all the browns to honey so dark it was virtually black. Oh how I so longed to taste them all!. Unfortunately my parents hated the stuff and I never got to enjoys those treasures from Kentish bees and their hives.
