Bradley Residents.
A Memory of Bilston.
I used to visit two ladies in Bradley during the war years,Arvind and Bessie Walker.
Bessie taught me at Stonefield junior school and always rode a bicycle to school. When I visited her home she used to take me on the back of her bike.As a treat in the days of rationing she used to feed me mock crab sandwiches which were actually a mixture of dried egg and chopped tomato! They were quite a treat in those frugal times.
During my time at school Bessie took time off to visit her brother in Sydney, Australia. She travelled by ship so was away a long time.On her return voyage she stopped off in Melbourne and was met my an old acquaintance from Bradley called Ed Roberts.Who had recently lost his wife.Instead of re-joining the ship,Bessie stayed on and eventually married Ed.He worked for General Motors so was able to give her a wonderful lifestyle. In time he was moved to Detroit USA where they remained for the rest of their lives. Today while sorting through old photos I found one showing their wedding day.
