Bingley, The Druid's Altar 1894

More about this scene
The Druids’ Altar is a naturally large millstone grit formation on the edge of, and overlooking, the Aire valley conurbation, with Bradford to the east and to the west the eastern end of the Yorkshire Dales. The top of the rock is marked with cup and rings, typical of many such marked rocks on the adjacent moors. Disraeli is reported to have addressed the Young Conservatives here in 1844; nearby, it is said that the Chartists held meetings. The purpose of the ‘Altar’ has been celebratory - recently a beacon was lit here at the coronation jubilee - or as a meeting and picnic spot.
