The Suffolk Punch Howard Drive

A Memory of Borehamwood.

In February 1957 a new pub was opened in Howard Drive called ‘The Suffolk Punch’ it belonged to the brewers ‘Charring & Co’. It stood directly opposite a row of shops. When I was old enough to drink it became my local. My father worked there as a barman after it first opened, right into the 60s. It had a public and saloon bar that stood either side of the off-licence. We had some great times there. They held many weekly dart matches there as well. It was always the tradition after a good night’s booze-up, to visit the fish n chip shop, just before they closed! It later years it was renamed ‘The Willow Tree’ which got burned down. Sadly, in 2012 it was demolished to make way for some flats. Does anyone remember going to this pub?
