Brecon Castle and town are Norman in origin, but the castle came first. It was the creation of Bernard de Neufmarche, one of many Norman conquerors, to keep the Welsh in their place. This site, on higher ground at the confluence of the Usk and the Honddu, was ideal. The castle saw plenty of military action in the ensuing centuries, but by 1800 it had fallen into ruin. The wealthy Morgan family of Tredegar Park came to its aid and rebuilt parts of the castle and the adjoining house in 1809. Its site, so useful as a castle, was equally good for a hotel - and the Castle Hotel it is to this day.

I came to Brecon in 1957, I think I had been here in another life as the place was so familiar, it was like coming home. My Army days in Brecon were great, Peg;s Café by the bus station, the café at Camden corner, the café at the top of the hill, the place was brilliant. Place Of Birth
I was born at 5 Bowen Terrace, Sept 42. My best friend's dad Mr Lewis was an engine driver on the trains at Brecon Station which was opposite our house. I used to ride on the footplate while he was shunting around the goods yard. Day Trips To Brecon
As a child growing up in the mining village of Cwmtwrch in the 1940's and 50's, I enjoyed the family day trips to the cathedral town of Brecon, especially in summer. The public bus would take us from Ystradgynlais to Brecon,a distance of 20 miles passing interesting places such as Craigynos Castle (once owned by the famous opera singer Adelina Patti), the Crai Reservoir, and Sennybridge. So Quiet !
This photo evokes memories of Brecon when it was a small peaceful market town with little traffic. I find it difficult to imagine now that this street had two way traffic. We had no traffic lights in Brecon then, just a traffic controller at the top of Ship St. Today this scene would be of traffic everywhere, parked cars and lorries and of course it has been one way for very many years. This street is closed to traffic for the May and November fairs by an ancient charter.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
