The 1960s In Chatham

A Memory of Chatham.

I was born in Chatham in 1951 and lived there up untill I got married when I was 19. I can remember a pub on Military Road called the Three Brothers, I think. We used to meet there before going to the Dockyard for the weekly dance and disco. We also used to go ballroom dancing again in the High Street but I can't remember the name of the place. It was run by a husband and wife team and we would have a lesson for about half an hour and then we would be foxtrotting and waltzing to Engleburt Humperdink all night. Great and innocent times. I also worked at the Dockyard and I remember they had a couple of open days that I got involved in, we were really up to date with our computer that was the size of the Town Hall!! And I remember our punch cards. Happy days.

I'm only six years late for commenting on this post. But had to as my Aunt and Uncle owned the TWO brothers in Military Road. I too went dancing at the Court School of Dancing, above Burtons nearly opposite the pub. It was run by husband and wife team. I can remember his name as Derek but not hers.
The name is Paul Hedge by the way.
Thanks for putting me straight on the 2 brothers pub. I wasn't sure if I had got the name right. I used to live in Burma Way right at the top of the hill, and I can remember getting almost cut of during some really bad winters. Haven't been back for several years now as the town has changed so much. It's good to think back on the times many years ago, especially when we used to go to the pub and dancing at the court. I also used to go to the disco's at HMS Pembroke which is where I met my husband. happy days.
I am researching Family history. My father remembers Fred Sullivan ,who was his uncle, owning The Two Brothers in the 1930's and later on Fred's son Gilbert owning the same pub with his wife Elsie.
Pub owning seemed to run in the family as Fred's sister ,Jessie (my great grandmother) married a Licensed victualler who ran a pub in Davenport.
