This elegant pier was built using rails torn up from the South West Railway, and opened in 1867. It was hoped that paddle steamers would call on a main route from London to South Wales, but the pier had to rely on trips to places nearer home like Minehead, Ilfracombe and Chepstow.

On the surface of it there was nothing to do in Clevedon for a teenager, but I was wrong.
