More about this scene

Once known as 'Coveshoo', Cliffe was a meeting place for the Great Councils of Kent in Saxon times. The ridge top village of Cliffe was constantly in the news during 2003, when the villagers and other local people fought a vigorous campaign against the government's proposed siting of a new airport at Cliffe. They were supported by the RSPB, who said that an airport here would mean an end to the wildlife reserves nearby.

A fascinating picture looking south from the church. The line of houses in Turner Street can be seen in the distance, also some in Norwood corner area where our family moved to in the late 50s. On the extreme right of the picture is one of the majestic elm trees, sadly gone now, due to the ravages of Dutch Elm disease. The trees were such a feature of the village landscape in those days.
They had six daughters Sarah born 1880,Violet 1883 Mabel 1887, Edith 1890, Clara 1892,and Daisy 1895 my grandmother.

I remember this shop very well, there was still sweet rationing then. Georgeous smells. Mr Parker called on Wednesday to take the order and delivered them on Friday even after we moved to Wainscott. What price Tesco Home Delivery!
