More about this scene
Castle Street is Clitheroe's main shopping street. Shops here have been kept by the same families for years, and they still have a reputation for quality and service. A wine merchant's shop run for over a century by the same family, a butcher making sausages using recipes his great-grandfather used 80 years ago - these are in King and Castle Streets. In this photograph the shops look quite busy. Tuesday and Saturday are market days, and the town is packed with villagers coming in from miles around. Wednesday is still half-day closing. We can see how the Castle dominates the street, even though only its keep is still standing. The Starkie Arms Hotel is on the far right of our photograph. Notice the stage-coach arch next to the bay windows: the stage coaches to Preston and Blackburn left from here.
