Daventry, High Street c.1948

More about this scene
This view of the High Street shows many buildings that have either since disap- peared or have been radi- cally reworked. The gable- ended house at the centre of the picture at the end of the High Street was demol- ished when Tavern Lane was widened in about 1955. The first building on the left, and the second, Maloney & Sons, jewellers, were demolished to make a new entrance to Foundry Place in the late 1960s. Further on, on the left, hoardings around the Midland Bank suggest that this photograph might have been taken in 1948, just before the bank opened. The Northamptonshire Farmers building on the right was demolished and rebuilt as a supermarket. It is now the Argos store.
