Happy Days

A Memory of Gloucester.

I was born in Gloucester in 1949 & had a really wonderful childhood there with my two younger brothers.
In the early years, we spent our school holidays exploring Robinswood Hill. Taking picnics, lighting & cooking on fires,
just having so much innocent fun.
We lived on an estate that was a close community although we didn't realize it in those days.

When we were in our teens we'd hop on a bus & go further afield, Newent rings a bell. We just enjoyed exploring the countryside. I was in the girl guides & loved it.

Two of us went to great schools, Ribston Hall & the Crypt. My other brother went to Hatherly Secondary (I think)
& came out almost illiterate. Luckily he was streetwise & clever. Ultimately he was successful.

Our parents were hard working-class people.

Actually, all 3 of us have been what are regarded as successful. We've all worked hard, our parents' ethic paid off.

Shame Gloucester's changed so much. Progress is good but I don't recognize it anymore.
I drove down Barton Street a while ago, stopped to get some petrol & was scared. I didn't feel safe.
