In the distance is Wainhouse Tower, 253ft high, with over 400 steps and weighing in at about 9000 tonnes. It was built between 1871 and 1875 as a chimney to take away smoke from John Wainhouse's Washer Lane Dyeworks, but it was never used. In 1893 there was a plan to demolish it, but this was never carried out. In 1912 there was even a proposal to convert it into a crematorium.
