I Remeber A Few Of These Old People
A Memory of Harpurhey.
Teddy Peacock, I think you knocked about with Freddie Turley? And yes, Mrs Jelly, loved her except when they put us in those camp beds in the afternoon. Yes I was the one forced to walk every Whit Monday with Cathrines with my two sisters either side and if we didnt make front page ma went mad. I used to love big Millie who lived on Dalton Street near Peggys shop, a tragedy when her son fell from the CIS building as a window cleaner. As for the gent from St Pats, we loved it when your whistle went before ours so we could pelt the snowballs at you. On the front we had the herbalist where we nicked cigs, Cresswells chippie, Lee bros, The jewish lady, the shop on the bridge, my favourite place was the tunnel of love facing the Rex cinema. At the back of Eliza, Ann St was the railway and one afternoon for a bet I walked the tunnel which came out at the stumps!! I remember Mrs Jones at Osbourne St baths where we went for our weekly bath - huge they were. As for the Kites I see Billy now and then and as my dad fed their horse I also used to get a ride. Before I finish off lets see if you remember The Fout, Bobs Hill, the Coal yard with your pram? The Irk overflowing coming in our street. The great train disaster when the bridge collapsed on Collyhurst Road near Cooper's barrel works. I s--t myself on the metro when it crosses that bridge. Oh by the way, my name is Mickey Rooney, I had five sisters at the time and my mother was Marry Tighe [ Rooney ] HOPE SOMEBODY REMEMBERS ME.
