Hawarden County Grammar School

A Memory of Hawarden.

I was about 14 when I moved to Buckley from Wallasey and went to Hawarden Grammar School. I have good memories of the time there and would like to contact some of my old (now really old) friends from those days. I am now 84.
I left Hawarden to work at Llay Hall coal mine in 1944 and then returned to the school in 1948 for about three months before leaving for Aberystwyth.

do you rember ralph bennett malcolm edwards frank pritchard ?
Hello, None of the names you list ring a bell with me. I am now 89 and would be interested in getting in touch with anyone from my Hawarden days. I was in touch with a friend Ken Hampson but he died a year or so ago and I was briefly in touch with Albert Moore but have not kept in touch. Write to me via email. Do the names Clive Williams, Noel Connah, Cyril Daniels, Mary Daniels, ?? Stewart, Geoffrey Etheridge, Ian Jackson, ?? Tozer, trigger any memories?
Ben Jones was the head master, Mr Lawson was the English teacher, Miss Thompson was the history teacher, Miss Jones taught Spanish, Mr Brooks was the maths teacher and when he left Mr Bell took over from him. Mr J.S. Williams taught physics and Mr C.F. Williams taught Geography I first went to the school around Easter 194? after coming from Wallasey to Buckley, and the following September Miss Lumb became the chemistry teacher - taking over from Mr Richardson ( I think)
I now live in Canada having moved here in 1956. I'd love to hear from you.

Hi Bob,
I moved to north Wales around 36 years ago with my family from Birkenhead, and moved to Hawarden 4 years ago; our final move after 50 yrs of marriage. The only info I can give you is the local milkman is called Peter connah of connah's dairy area , he owns a farm locally and raises horses I think it's somewhere around Mancot : I believe he is quite a rider doing stunts and demonstrations, such as riding while standing on the horses bare back.
Hawarden doesn't look much different now than the old photos on this site.
Regards.
Robert Peter Briscoe.
I came to HGS in 1955 .... Ms E. Madoc-Jones taught French, "Doc" Lumb, Chemistry, "John Sam" Williams Physics, "Jimmy" Bell Maths, Mr Lawson English, "Ma" Abrahams Art, Ms Joy Robinson Biology, "Flash" Foulkes PT, and of course the Caretaker that everybody knew as "Eddy The Bog". My sister came a couple of years later.
I left in 1959 and went to sea for 4 years as a Midshipman in the Blue Funnel Line (Liverpool - Far East), spent a year or so in the Antarctic on an expedition, became a ship's Captain, worked/lived in Japan/PRC/Malaysia/Indonesia/Croatia/Slovenia and so on. Now happily retired in Tasmania with an aging Beagle.
HGS was a pretty good starting point.
Enjoying reading the comments about HGS. I was there from 1947 to 1956 and remember the names of the teachers well.Add to the list Miss Ruth Jones (phys Ed)' Bob Williams, music, Dick Frances , Latin,Miss Abrahams , art. I also remember the three people mentioned by omg11. In fact do you remember Frank's social at the Tithe Barn that caused such a commotion because the Ben wouldn't allow a social at school for some reason?Manxie Edwards was the school cricket captain. I see a fellow HGS student lives in Tasmania. I lived there for fifteen years with my late husband and then moved back to WA.
Hi,

I know this is a long shot but looking for a photo of my great uncle Eli George Lawson who was the English teacher at Hawarden Grammar School for a long period in the 1930-1960s I believe, If anyone has a photo they could share that would be amazing.

Many thanks
Greg Lawson
