Holbeach Marsh
A Memory of Holbeach.
We moved to Holbeach Marsh in 1952. I came from a large family of six boys and five girls. My father and two of my elder brothers worked for Mr Caldwell, on his farm. I went to Holbeach St Mathews school from 1952 until 1955 with my twin sisters Edith and Mary, and the youngest of the family George. My neighbours were the Smiths and my best mate was Roy Barber who moved away in 1954. If there was any trouble or mischief around, we were in it. I remember one time, I was on my way back from catching sticklebacks when I saw Roy's dads car coming towards me. I also remember the car swerving from one side of the narrow road to the other, and when the car pulled up I nearly fell over because Roy was driving. Not to be asked twice, I jumped into the passenger seat. Roy was really to short to reach the pedals (hence the swerving). Well, he drove and I worked the foot controls. Everything was going well until we went down a bank and into a dyke, fortunately no one was hurt - well maybe the bum did for a while. Although we were only there for three years I have so many great memories of the Marsh and Holbeach St Mathews.
