Horbury, St Peter's Church c.1955

More about this scene
The spire of St Peter's Church can be seen from all parts of Horbury. It was a substantial gift to the town from John Carr (1723-1807), the famous architect who never forgot his roots, even though he twice became the Lord Mayor of York. The sandstone church replaced the old Norman church of St Leonard, which was demolished in 1790; the first service at St Peter's took place on 18 May 1794. Monuments to Carr and his father hang on the wall of the church, and John Carr is interred in the vault below the vestry.
