Nostalgic memories of Hulme's local history

Share your own memories of Hulme and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

My name is Lynda (Howarth) and I lived in Hulme from 1943 until 1953. My Mum was Edith Woods, and she married Stanley Howarth. My mum used to live in Mary Street and then we moved to Junction Street, after the war. I went to Mulberry Street School and my best friends were Anne (from a big family) and Pat Fletcher, who lived next door. I also remember the family called Sparrows. Another friend was Denis ...see more

Hi, I'm trying to get in touch with Grace Lee - she went to Chorlton Tech which then became Wilbraham Heigh school from 1964/1968. She lived on Clarenden Rd, Moss side. It would be good to be in touch with anyone who attended at that time.

We then moved to Upper Moss Lane where we had a greengrocer's with our house behind - right next to the petrol station. I lived with my mother and grandad in Princess Street, Rusholme and went to Holy Trinity Infant School. We used to play in Platt Fields which was only at the bottom of our street. My friends were Alma Lynch, Ann Collins, who had three brothers. We had two corner shops and "Lens Greengrocers". I used to be a "Paper Girl" from the newsagents in Walmer Street, next door to the "chippy". The ...see more
I was born in the street where Pauldins was on the corner. Higher Chatham Street in 1955. I don't remember it but the family used to talk about it burning down because my grandparents owned the Salutation Pub at the time and it had to be hosed down in case it was burnt as well. The Salutation is still standing. I used to watch all the students going down the street to the Dental Hospital.
I went to Gaythorne Primary School until 1963. The headmaster was Mr. Jacks and the teacher of the last year was Mr. Beasley. The teacher in the aged 5's class was Miss Atkinson. I loved Gaythorne Primary. I wonder if anybody else has fond memories of this school in Hulme.
My aunty Hilda was a Bowcock from Hulme before she married my Uncle Jimmy Flanagan. Wonder if she was related to the Bowcocks mentioned on this site. Sadly she has long since passed away but I am guessing she was a relative.
