The Astoria

A Memory of Hyde.

I remember going to the Astoria when I was 16(1967) I used to say I was 18, I suppose it was a dance hall, I remember there was a balcony where you could go and I remember that there used to be a man downstairs at the entrance, I think he was called Ron. I remember the pubs that I was able to get in at 16, The Woodman at the bus station The Jolly Carter. There was Mishia's ice cream parlour Duncan and Fosters cake shop and cafe in the mall, my girlfriend(Evelyn Millns) worked in there in the cafe, I'd give anything to be sat in that cafe for a day. My Name is Tony Smith.

I remember the Astoria ...very upset when it became a bingo hall. The hippodrome (stannies) Monday nights I think all teenagers upstairs making comments on film I.e. that face rings a bell and response was a big bell ringing. Then we were thrown out by man who decided which row he thought were the culprits . Lots to remember Togos, Mescias ,Joes pies on the market. The jungle ride. Lots to remember. Jean Drain
I was the pianist along with Don on drums and Eric on Bass.
The singers were Dorothy Denton and Colin Walker.
