More about this scene
To the left of the photograph we can see the gable of the Valiant Sailor public house, which abutted with Priory Lane. Trade was brisk here, for sailors approaching from South Quay saw this hostelry before all others, and there were about 400 pubs to choose from in the town in the 19th century! This area was rife with 'hoares and harpies', and fights and smash-ups were frequent; it is hardly surprising that Read & Wilbur, the builders and undertakers on the right, were kept in business for many a year.
