I grew up in Lee, from 1948. My parents owned the bakers in the High street. We first lived in the flat above, with the bakery behind. We then moved to a flat on Marine Parade, not as posh as they are now! We owned the BlueBird café, which was a single story hut on the corner on Marine Parade, we also had the Penguin restaurant, the Sandpiper in Pier street, and various ice cream and candy floss shops on the sea ...see more
My maternal grandparents ran a hotel/tea rooms in the High st called “Hove to”. I fondly remember our family visits 3 or 4 times a year (we lived in Rutland), a long drive in those days. I am 62 now and we must have visited from approx 1962 to 1968. I remember having measles while staying there once and I had to lie in a dark room all day when everyone else was out having fun. My husband (Tony Coleman), tells me of being in a Children's Home on the sea front. Does anyone remember this or was anyone there with him? He remembers Ernie Curl, Tony Lobb and David Ayers. He would dearly like to get in touch with anyone with any knowledge of this time.
