William George Higgs.

A Memory of Markham.

My maternal grandfather, William George Higgs, known as Bill to his family and friends was born in Abernant Road in Markham to George and Edith Higgs on the 11th of July 1925. His parents separated and at some point he moved to Bargoed to be with his mother. It was in the back garden of his mother's house at 38 North Road, Bargoed that he met Rita Cook, and they got married in 1949. They then lived at Frances Street, Bargoed where they had their only daughter Caroline Higgs, she is of course my mother. By this time Bill was working at Bargoed colliery. When Caroline was just ten years old they moved from Frances Street to a larger property called Gladstone Villa. My mother Caroline married my father, William Douglas Dexter, in April 1968 and I was born in the August of 1969. In the summer of 1978 my family moved the Sycamore Court on the Gilfach Estate in Bargoed, then my grandfather became a widower when my nana Rita died on Saturday the 10th of July 1982. He found it hard to cope without her and eventually he went into a number of nursing homes before he died at Plasgeller Nursing Home in Brynmawr on Sunday the 30th of March 2014, he was 88.
